Pacing is not the total reward a player earns. It is the shape of the curve that reward follows across sessions: flat pacing goes numb, spiky pacing frustrates, and the right shape depends on which decision you want to stay meaningful the longest.

Pacing curve
The shape a reward rate follows across a sequence of stages or sessions.
Flat pacing
A curve whose reward rate barely changes, so no stage feels more significant than another.
Spiky pacing
A curve with sudden jumps a player cannot anticipate or prepare for.
Anchor decision
The one decision the pacing curve is meant to keep meaningful for as long as possible.
Read a curve stage by stage, not as a total
Read the left lane as the curve shape over time. The right lane is the one decision those stages must keep meaningful - not the running reward total.

A low but rising reward rate teaches the anchor decision cheaply.
Mid stage
